Mount Mulanje

The highest peak in southern Africa, one of the world's largest granite inselbergs and has some of the best granite climbing and most enjoyable trekking in the world. The home of the endangered Mulanje Cedar and its lush tawny landscape containing plant life not found anywhere else in the world.
See Malawi Travel will take you to the majestic Mount Mulanje also known as "Islands in the Sky". Its spectacular views have to be seen to be appreciated. It is a beautiful hours drive from Blantyre, south east of Malawi.  The highest point, Sapitwa translated "do not to go there" lies at 3002m and involves fun scramble climbing. Surrounded by near-vertical cliffs of granite, the mountain rises steeply and suddenly from the lowlands to the highlands with choices of routes between quite gentle walking and serious climbing.
The massif is formed by deep gorges creating spectacular views of rivers and gnarled forests, waterfalls tumble creating pools. Every route and every upward step, the views grow, dwarfing all that surrounds it.

MULANJE MASSIF PEAKS

SAPITWA PEAK - 3002m   |   CHAMBE PEAK - 2557m   |   CHILEMBA PEAK - 2355m
NORTH PEAK - 2891m   |   WEST PEAK - 2686m   |   SOUTH PEAK - 2637m
The mountain is known for its mythology and ancient Malawi of various legendary creatures that are believed to live there, like the hobbits, a flying serpent called Napolo who floats around creating the misty and stormy conditions that envelop the peaks to schizophrenic mountain spirits that make you disappear and work.
The vegetation changes with altitude and there’s plenty of wildlife from the klipspringer, a tiny antelope, to various other small mammals and, of course, a variety of birds.  Fishing for trout is possible in the River Lichenya which drains the south-western slopes.
